Womens Showcase Series

The final round of the National Womens Showcase Series is due to be held in Brisbane, Queensland, this weekend (July 1st and 2nd), at Acacia Ridge and Boondall. Teams competing are the Goannas (Brisbane), AllStars (Melbourne), and the IceCaps (Canberra). The Canberra side is second on the table, and is expected to dominate, but the games between the AllStars and Goannas are sure to be exciting.

The first game starts at 0600 (ouch!) each morning, meaning we need to arrive at about 5am for warmups, which means we get up at around 4am or so (where’s my sleep in!).

Acacia Ridge on Saturday 1 July:

Game 1 @ 0600: Goannas v AllStars

Game 2 @ 0725: Goannas v Icecaps

Game 3 @ 0850: AllStars v IceCaps

Boondall on Sunday 2 July:

Game 4 @ 0600: IceCaps v AllStars

Game 5 @ 0725: Goannas v AllStars

Game 6 @ 0850: Goannas v IceCaps

I’ll be playing for Melbourne, along with my sister’s daughter. I expect these games to be fast, exciting, physical, exhausting, and a _lot_ of fun! I’m hoping to update this entry with results if I can get some Internet access in Brisbane.

Cheers,

- Rebecca

Well, the Tournament is over, as well as the Series.

The Brisbane Goannas dominted the tournament, with 4 wins. The Canberra Ice Caps and Melbourne AllStars had one win apiece - Melbourne finally posting their first victory for the Series :)

Some players travelled a _long_ way to play in this Series in Brisbane - I think there were four from Perth, a few from South Australia, three from NSW, six or seven from Melbourne, six or seven from the ACT, and what seemed to be a full bench of Brisbane girls (they were _everywhere_ on the ice).

My impressions? I need to skate faster! I had an absolute ball, and I’m sure everyone else did too :) Rock on JMK, and the proposed National Womens League next year!

With the games so compressed, I had no time (or had no energy) to set up my camera and take some pictures of the action *sigh*
